You have attained this puppy-rearing landmark! It is time to give your new dog its first grooming!

However, have you considered the measures you must take to prepare your puppy for the groomer? Early socialisation influences a puppy's future behaviour, so how can we get this right? Read Fido's story and receive my five best grooming suggestions to ensure your pup is groomer-ready!

Fido is ready for his first haircut! You have chosen a groomer, scheduled an appointment, and your pet will come home smelling sweet and feeling clean... Delicious dog!

However, Fido is blissfully ignorant of his appointment. He is prancing about the lawn while carrying your sandal, scouting the perfect hiding area for a massive chewing session. The next thing Fido knows, he's at a "groomer" that looks and smells exactly like a veterinarian's office (he was just at that new place and they shot him... OUCH!)

Fido is now uncertain about how his day will play out....

Worse worse, Fido is surrounded by unusual people, objects, odours, and sounds, and his flip-flop is nowhere to be found. In the kennel next door is a Labradoodle that has not been brushed since before the lockdown began. She is anticipating her time in the tub with composure, as she is aware of what is to come.

The water is warm and the hands are kind, yet they are foreign and smell strange... The liquid substance spills into his eyes and a small amount enters his nose. Fido snorts and becomes rather defensive. Fido can't hear the woman's words because water is rushing past his ears.

Now that he has climbed up and perched on a dry table, the towel smells strange and he still cannot see his mother, let alone the flip-flop. All he want was a delicious, chewy flip-flop.... A warm wind arrives, blowing and pushing, it is a strange sensation, Fido doesn't mind it, but it is very loud, he is a little unsure, moving away from it, he loses a foot off the end of the table.... whoa... panic.... and then simultaneously a tension around his neck where the grooming table tie is holding him in place. He can neither move nor fall backwards. This does not seem like fun to Fido.

Fido enjoys the calming sensation of the brush, but it rapidly transforms into a buzzing, vibrating object that feels WEIRD! Fido is not pleased to "give" this strange woman his leg to touch with the odd vibrating object, which tugs on his coat, tickles, and feels quite unusual. If Fido moves, he is aware that he may fall, and if he does not fall, the collar around his neck becomes tighter.

The lady holds his leg firmly and it won't stop, the noise, the smell, the sensation, Fido is exhausted, Fido can't process all of his senses, Fido turns his head away, licks his lips, closes his eyes, and blinks frequently, trying to tell everyone he can't handle it, but they are on a schedule and the smelly Labradoodle is up next, so the grooming must continue. In the end, he will "learn," won't he? Fido submits quietly, emotionally disengages, and complies.... After receiving a "fresh puppy haircut," Fido smelled of sugar floss.

Fido discovered that excursions away from home are tense. Fido has learned that locations like as the veterinarian and groomer are unpleasant. Instead of being listened to and allowed to comprehend every aspect of the grooming process, Fido has learned to shut down in order to survive. All Fido wanted was his flip-flop and a quiet spot in the backyard to gnaw on it... dogs do not schedule grooming appointments.

So, what are we going to do to prevent Fido from having this experience? Fido will require grooming for the rest of his life, and it is our obligation to ensure he can handle it. It is also unjust to place your groomer at danger. If Fido feels threatened, he may bite, which is undesirable for all parties involved. cockapoo for sale near me
