Childcare

We know that getting ready to send your child to nursery school can be a scary time that comes up faster than you expected. It can be hard to find the right setting for you and your child. We asked our nursery managers for their best advice when looking for a nursery to help with the decision.

It's important to check out the nursery when it's in full swing. Your first impression of the nursery is very important, as is how it makes you feel. Parents often tell us, "I'd like to get a sense of the place." People who came to the open day were often asked to come back when the nursery was in session. This gave a more natural and realistic impression.

When you look around, what do you think of the other kids? Are they happy most of the time? Do they look interested? Are their needs being met by the staff?

When kids come up to you and say hello, it's also a good sign that they're comfortable and happy where they are. Don't be fooled by a nursery that looks perfect. If the kids don't seem interested or the staff seems tense as they try to make everything look clean and neat, it might not be the best fit.

Think about how you want your child to grow up. If your child loves being outside, try to find a nursery with a big garden or forest school. If you want a place for your baby that is good for small babies, check out what the nursery has to offer. Does your child need a lot of stimulation for his or her senses or have special needs? Talk to the nursery's manager and find out what they have set up to help your child.

Don't be afraid to ask questions. Managers like it when parents ask questions because it gives them a chance to show off their setting and things that might be important to you.

Check to see if the nursery has a system like Famly (or any other system) because it can really help ease parents' worries. The staff can send lots of photos, and parents can message back and forth as much as they want to find out about their child's day. We and the parents have both benefited from it.
